Top places to visit during the holidays

  1. Clifton Mills: A nominee for USA Today’s 10 Best Reader’s Choice 2014, Clifton Mills holds an annual light show which displays over three million lights. During the show, all the lights go off hourly and relight in an orchestrated pattern. Concession food is served, and homestyle meals are made in the restaurant year round.
  2. Gatlinburg: This city, located in the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, is a slightly longer drive but a cost-effective vacation spot. In addition to the pre-existing hotspots in Gatlinburg, numerous holiday events such as light shows, concerts, and fireworks shows occur, making this an ideal trip to splurge on.
  3. Hillforest Victorian Christmas Exhibit: Everyone has a soft spot for the Victorian era aesthetic, and Hillforest takes on the nostalgic feeling of Christmas past as the home, established in 1855, is adorned in traditional holiday décor. They aren’t open often, so early reservations are a necessity.
  4. Brandywine Ski Resort: In northeast Ohio lies the Boston Mills Brandywine Resort. Unlike Mad River Mountain, which makes snow when the weather is warm, Brandywine relies on Mother Nature for its business, but it’s no less fun. There are lessons for all ages, as well as intense training for those aiming to be experts.
  5. PNC Festival of Lights: The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden hosts an annual light show for those who prefer holiday scenery in addition to lots of cuddly animals (which is essentially everyone). Also, new to the zoo is a Frozen-themed Wonderland where the kids – or anyone with a weakness for Disney – can meet the royal princesses, Anna and Elsa.
