Women’s basketball: Bradbury reaches 100 wins at WSU

Wright State team defeated Detroit 74-59 last Thursday. The win marked fifth-year head coach Mike Bradbury’s 100th win with Wright State. The Raiders are currently second in the Horizon League with a 21-7 overall record and a 10-4 record in the conference.

“I didn’t even know it,” Bradbury said about his milestone victory. “We don’t pay attention to that stuff. We just try to win every game all of the time.”

Bradbury’s overall record as the Raiders head coach is 100-60. Including his three years at Morehead State, his record is 150-104. Last season, he led the team to the program’s first-ever Horizon League Tournament title. The Raiders traveled to Green Bay and defeated the Phoenix for the first time in program history 88-69. He said, “That’s probably been the biggest Wright State moment.”

The Raiders were 5-2 in February and have won three of their last four games with two games left in regular season play. Bradbury gave credit to his players for his success. He said, “That’s what makes any coach good. You have players that do the right thing and that’s all you really need.”

Wright State has been performing well for him this year as senior guard Tay’ler Mingo is a finalist for the Lieberman Award. She has ranked at the top of the NCAA and conference rankings all season for scoring and steals. She averages 22.7 points per game with 5.4 assists and 3.4 steals.

Senior forward Tayler Stanton has been all over the boards averaging 10.9 rebounds per game which would rank her fourth in program history for rebounds per game in a season.

Senior guard Courtney Boyd has made a team-high 63 three-pointers and averages 10.5 points per game.

Senior forward Breanna Stucke is averaging 10.2 points and seven rebounds per game.

Bradbury likes to keep his players happy, rested and motivated.   “We don’t do anything special,” he said. “We just treat them right. I treat them like they’re my kids.”

Wright State players have won the Horizon League Player of the Week award three times this season, trailing only Youngstown State. Mingo has won twice (Nov. 10, Dec. 15) and Stucke won on Jan. 26.

“We‘re not big on that,” said Bradbury. “We don’t talk about players of the week, MVP’s. We don’t discuss any of that.”

Bradbury wants his players to walk away from his program as good people. “That’s all we ever talk about,” he said. “Be a good person and give more than you expect.”

The Raiders currently lead the conference in scoring offense with an average of 77.8 points per game. They will host UIC on Wed, March 4 at the Nutter Center. The Raiders are 11-2 at home this season and defeated UIC 74-63 in Chicago on Feb. 14. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
