Tornadoes rip through Miami Valley

The National Weather Service confirmed at least five tornadoes in the Miami Valley area, particularly in Auglaize, Darke, Miami and Mercer counties, on Thursday, March 14. Hail, thunderstorm wind gusts and flooding were reported throughout the area as well. 

According to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, the Ohio Emergency Management System, Ohio State Highway Patrol and Ohio Department of Transportation are assisting local communities impacted by the damage. 

“We share the grief of the families who lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. Ohioans will come together as they always do with resilience and compassion as we support and rebuild our communities,” DeWine said in a press release

Philadelphia man kills three, St. Patrick’s Day parade canceled

Police arrested a man suspected of killing three family members in Philadelphia on Saturday, March 16, according to the Associated Press.  

“The mayhem forced the cancellation of a St. Patrick’s Day parade and shut down a Sesame Street-themed amusement park. Authorities in Pennsylvania’s Bucks County issued a shelter-in-place order for some areas for several hours,” the press release reads.

Russia holds presidential elections

From March 15 to 17, Russia held presidential elections that would dictate who holds power for six more years. Current Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to win with no serious challenger in his midst, according to the Associated Press

“The election comes against the backdrop of a ruthless crackdown that has stifled independent media and prominent rights groups. Putin’s fiercest foe, Alexei Navalny, died in an Arctic prison in February, and other critics are either in jail or in exile,” the release reads.
