For those who are passionate about acting and performing, Wright State University offers several degrees in the Department of Theatre, Dance and Motion Picture. But what about students in other majors who are still interested in theatre?
Dylana Harris, president of Troupe, has the solution.
The organization is open to all majors according to Harris.
This year marks the tenth year for Troupe, a student-led organization focused on live performance acting. The group currently mainly specializes in improvisation, but Harris hopes to work on scripted shows once the group gains more members.
During meetings, the group plays acting games and improv activities for members to practice for the shows they put on each semester.
“It’s fun to have an outlet on campus where we can do a bit of acting even though we’re not a part of the [theatre, dance and motion picture] department. We all have different majors,” said Harris.
A goal for Troupe is to be a place where students who aren’t theatre or acting majors can explore the world of theatre, according to Harris. Any student interested in Troupe can join, there is no pressure to be great at acting or performing. As long as a student is interested in acting and enjoys it, they’re welcome to join.
Besides having fun, the acting games played at meetings are a great way for students to build their public speaking skills.
“It helps you gain confidence. If you can go up there and act silly for a little bit, it becomes a lot easier to do a lot of things in front of people,” said Harris.
Meetings are held on Mondays at 7:30 p.m. in 116 Health Sciences.
