Senior Dan Shafer placed ninth in the 8k race and senior Rachel Janson placed 20th in the 6k race at the Cedarville Friendship Invitational Saturday.
As a team, Wright State placed fourth in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Both teams will next compete on Oct. 4 at the All-Ohio Championships in Cedarville.
Club Football: George Mason edges Wright State in defensive struggle
George Mason scored the game’s only points on a touchdown with three minutes left in the game to defeat Wright State 6-0 Saturday night in Morgantown, WV.
WSU running back Nick Blower ran for almost 100 yards in the loss, according to Raiders head coach Anthony Van Horn.
Club Bowling: DeWitt, Spitzer place first, second at UNOH Racer Classic
Senior Stacy Spitzer and Shannon DeWitt placed first and second, respectively, during the Wright State Club Bowling program’s first competition of the season at the UNOH Racer Classic Sunday.
Spitzer won the high game award with a 297 score, while Sarah Endres came in second with a 265.
In team competition, the varsity women’s team finished third and the JV women’s team finished second.
The men’s varsity and JV teams both finished sixth, according to head coach Jeff Fleck.
Volleyball finishes 0-3 at Flyer Classic
Wright State finished the Western Kentucky Flyer Classic with three consecutive straight-set loses, the most recent of which occurred Sunday at the hands of the Dayton Flyers.
UD tallied 37 kills to WSU’s 26 and held a .380 to .045 advantage in hitting percentage.
The Raiders (6-11) return to the floor Friday night in Green Bay, WI against the Phoenix to begin Horizon League conference play.
Women’s soccer dominated by Mountaineers
Wright State had a rough go at No. 21-ranked West Virginia Sunday afternoon as the Raiders fell 4-1 to the Mountaineers with Emilie Fillion scoring the lone goal for WSU.
WSU is winless in its last five and heads into its conference season Saturday hosting Youngstown State at Alumni Field. Fillion’s goal on Sunday came in the 31st minute to knot the contest at one as she forced a WVU turnover and chipped a shot from 15 yards over WVU goalkeeper Sara Keane.
The Mountaineers proceeded to score three unanswered goals as WVU outshot WSU 22-2 for the match.
Lovelady pegs three assistants
Newly promoted WSU head baseball coach Greg Lovelady announced Friday afternoon that he has retained one assistant coach and hired two additional to round out his 2014 staff.
Former WSU standout Justin Parker returns for his fourth year with the Raiders. Parker played for three seasons with the Raiders from 2006-08 batting .359 before being drafted in the sixth round by Arizona. After a brief stint in the minors, he returned to WSU as a coach in 2011.
Rounding out the coaching staff is Jeff Mercer and Jake Hansen. Mercer played for WSU in 2008 and 2009 after transferring from Dayton.
Mercer was the Horizon League Player of the Year after matching a school record with 74 runs batted in.
Doubles pair takes Wright State Shootout
Junior Mason Bourbon and freshman Dan Gilbert were the top tennis doubles pair at last weekend’s Wright State Shootout at Arthur Fisher Park in Dayton.
Bourbon and Gilbert needed three victories before facing the the University of Dayton’s Bernardo Sanson and Aidan Koross in Sunday’s top flight doubles finals. Bourbon and Gilbert won the first-to-eight single set 8-4 to win the title.
Also walking away a champion from WSU was second-flight singles player Kirill Kultinov. After surviving a three-set marathon in his first match against Wittenberg’s Tyler Strong, Kultinov easily won his next two matches to advance to Sunday’s final. In Sunday’s final, he defeated Dayton’s Colin Bernier 6-3, 6-0 to win the title.
