First Weekend kicked off the 2021-2022 school year with games, events and opportunities for students to learn about the resources and clubs available on campus.

Student organization leaders are eager to continue promoting campus engagement.

Attending leaders weigh-in

WWSU 106.9 FM President Shea Neal worked as a group leader for incoming commuter students. He spent most of First Weekend showing students around campus and helping them feel more prepared for the transition to college.

“My favorite part of First Weekend was definitely seeing campus so lively and active again. As a student leader, I’ve been around for a few months when it was just us and a few faculty/staff members. To see hundreds and thousands of students back on campus enjoying the WSU community was a feeling I’ve needed to have for a long time now,” Neal said.

University Activities Board (UAB) President Jeffrey Shehee showed students around campus and attended the Joseph Tran magic comedy show. His biggest hope for the 2021-2022 school year is that student organization leaders will collaborate more frequently and that a sense of unity will be restored. In addition, he hopes that future Wright State University (WSU) events will be as inclusive and welcoming as this year’s event.

“I think one thing WSU already does that they should keep sticking to is finding more ways to incorporate inclusive excellence; just making sure that instead of holding your typical college panels, you’re aiming for something that truly concerns all students. A good way to do this is by considering things like, ‘what is life like on campus if I fall under a specific demographic?’,” Shehee said.

Unlike Neal and Shehee, College Panhellenic Council President Brittany Zazueta did not attend the entirety of First Weekend. However, her experiences prepping on campus for the events and looking at pictures and videos of the excitement from them have her eager to see what this school year has in store.

“My biggest hope is seeing students get super involved on campus and just putting themselves out there,” Zazueta said.
