Softball run-rules Cleveland State

Wright State softball fell behind 3-0 in the opening inning, but overcame the deficit after a six-run third inning and run-ruled Cleveland State 13-5 in game one of a double header at the WSU Softball field on Friday, April 8.

Ashley Sharp collected her 10th win of the season while Macey Gunther drove in three runs on three hits.

The Vikings (8-21; Horizon 1-3) got straight to business in the first inning with their first four batters reaching base while Riley Ries knocked in the one and two batters with a 2 RBI double and then scored on a single by catcher Erica McNew.

Back-to-back singles led the game off for the Raiders (21-15; Horizon 6-1) before Hanna Floyd drove in Honnah Sursor to put Wright State on the board.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the third inning, Becka Peterson reached base on a fielder’s choice while Kate Pfeffer crossed the plate to cut the deficit to one. Sursor scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and then Gunther singled up the middle to give the Raiders their first lead 5-3.  On the first pitch of her at bat, Libby Pfeffer singled to score Gunther and then scored after a throwing error as Ashton Salyers singled; WSU led 7-3 through three innings.

After Peterson hit a RBI double in the 4th inning to give the Raiders an 8-3 lead, the Viking struck back two innings later as Emma Nicholas drove in two runs with a two-out single to right field.

Eight straight Raiders reached base with one out in the sixth inning as they powered a five run inning to complete the game.  Gunther drove in her third run of the game and then scored on a single by Salyers two batters later.  Kate Pfeffer completed the run-rule as she drove in her sister Libby with a bases loaded RBI single.

Due to weather concerns, the teams will complete the series on Sunday,  April 10 beginning at 12 noon.
