The holidays are a time for families and friends to get together, enjoy each other’s company and take advantage of the time with your loved ones.

Of course, the holidays don’t always bring out the best in everyone. Whether you enjoy the holidays or dread it, writing is a great way to express feelings.

Here are a few writing prompts to get you through these exciting or difficult, times:

The perfect Thanksgiving/Christmas

Some holidays end up being perfect, but some fall flat. There’s no denying that at some point, we’ve all dreamt of Thanksgiving/Christmas going a certain way, only for it to turn out the complete opposite.

If you can’t have it, write it. For your first writing prompt, write how you imagine your perfect Thanksgiving/Christmas. There’s no harm in dreaming.

Animal Family

Family is family.

Along with loving each other, it has its ups and downs. If you don’t have familial issues, this prompt will be easy.

Write about your favorite qualities you find in your loved ones. It’s a great way to remind us to be thankful for the ones we love.

Feel free to add a twist and attribute animals to the family members you’re not crazy about. Consider it self-therapy.

Last Thanksgiving/Christmas

It’s easy to forget to be thankful for what we have and get caught up with the trivial things in life. You never know how much you will miss something until it’s gone.

If this was your last Thanksgiving/Christmas, how would you spend it and who would you spend it with? This is a great way to appreciate the small things and have more patience.

Traditions and Memories

Traditions make memories and memories make family. As adults, most of us would love to be a kid again and experience the traditions we hold dear.

For this prompt, write about your favorite tradition or memory from the holidays. You could even write about a new tradition you would like to start. If there are children in your family, you’d be creating a new tradition and memory for them as well.

Favorites and Dislikes

While some love the holidays and some hate it, there are also those that are in between.

Finding what you like and/or dislike about this time of year is a great way to balance out the two.

To make it fun, write a poem or story about your favorite or least favorite things about the holidays. Who knows? You could be creating the next literary masterpiece.
